All attendees are expected to pay the posted registration fees and are responsible for paying all travel expenses including hotel accommodations, airfare, food, etc.
The AAS has limited funds available for panel participants and general conference attendees. We are able to offer some funding to individuals participating on the formal program through two funding options as listed below:
Graduate Student Complimentary Registration Lottery
The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is pleased to offer ten (10) free graduate student registrations for the 2018 conference in Washington, D.C. All currently enrolled graduate students (masters or doctoral programs) are eligible to enter, regardless of whether they have been accepted to the conference program. Winners will be chosen by lottery, after which those whose names have been drawn will be required to provide proof of current student status to the AAS Secretariat.
Upon confirmation of student status, the AAS will register the winners for the 2018 annual conference at no cost (a $75 value).
How to enter: Fill out this entry form and submit no later than October 15, 2017. One entry per person. AAS membership is not required to enter.
Winners will be selected in a random drawing on October 16, 2017 and notified thereafter. Official Sweepstakes Rules
Later Developing Countries (LDC) Travel Grants
The AAS has limited funds available to award LDC Travel Grants. These grants are available to individuals traveling from LDC countries (see Call for Proposals for list of ineligible countries). The deadline to request LDC funding was August 8, 2017. All requests were required to be submitted WITH the initial session proposal by the organizer of the proposal. All requests are currently under review.
We are unable to accept any additional requests for LDC funding.
Individuals awarded LDC funding will receive an award email approximately 3-4 weeks after proposal acceptance notification. Organizers of these sessions will also receive a copy of the award email.
Note: LDC Travel Grants requests are only accepted and considered for individuals participating on an organized panel, roundtable or workshop sessions. Individual paper presenters are not eligible for LDC grant consideration.
Graduate Student Stipends
The AAS has limited funds available to award Graduate Student Stipends. However, ALL Graduate Students accepted to appear on a formal conference panel session will receive a travel stipend of approximately $200. These stipends will be distributed to graduate student panel participants ONLY if the following criteria has been met:
- Student has registered for the conference at the student conference registration rate ($65/$75) by the December 1, 2017 participant pre-registration deadline.*
- Student lives more than 100 miles away from the Marriott Washington Wardman Park.
- Student has not received funding from other AAS sources.
*We do not offer student non-member conference registration rates. Therefore, all students on the program must be a current STUDENT MEMBER at the time of the conference registration. The criteria noted above are all that is required to receive the Graduate Student Stipend. There is no separate application. If you have met the criteria above, you do not need to contact the AAS separately to confirm if you will receive the stipend. Travel stipend checks are distributed on-site in Washington, DC. Valid photo ID is required.
GRANT & STIPEND DISTRIBUTION
All LDC grants and Graduate Student Stipend awards will be distributed on-site in Washington, DC. Award & stipend recipients may pick up their travel funds at the Travel Grants disbursement desk on the lobby level by the AAS registration counters in the Marriott Wardman Park.
