Learning Another Language: Goals and Challenges

The critical importance of language study across multiple linguistic worlds is surely self-evident for scholars of Asia, but it may be less so for non-Asianists.

Therefore the Association for Asian Studies welcomes the recent discussions on foreign language study within the Modern Language Association, and refers its members (and readers of the Asian Studies Newsletter) to a policy statement recently adopted by the MLA http://www.mla.org/ec_language_learning.

We believe the MLA policy is consistent with the long commitment of the AAS to expand language study in North American college and university curricula.

We strongly support our colleagues in all disciplines and in all aspects of inter-cultural language education who are working to create, maintain, or expand language programs on their campuses.
