Book Prizes

To recognize outstanding scholarship and contribution to the field, the Association annually* awards several prizes and awards, presented at the Awards Ceremony during the Annual Conference. Submission procedures vary each year and are posted each spring (April/May) after the councils meet at the AAS Annual Conference.
*All prizes are awarded annually unless otherwise noted.

East and Inner Asia

The Joseph Levenson Prize for pre-1900 English-language, non-fiction scholarly books on China
The Joseph Levenson Prize for post-1900 English-language, non-fiction scholarly books on China
The E. Gene Smith Prize for English-language scholarly books published on Inner Asia
The Patrick D. Hanan Prize for translations from Chinese or Inner Asian languages in English
The Bei Shan Tang Prizes for research on Chinese art history

Northeast Asia

The John Whitney Hall Prize for English-language scholarly books published on Japan.
The James B. Palais Prize for English-language scholarly books published on Korea

South Asia

The Bernard S. Cohn Prize for first books on South Asia
The Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy Prize for English-language scholarly work on South Asia beyond the first book
The A.K. Ramanujan Prize for book translations from South Asian languages into English

Southeast Asia

The Harry J. Benda Prize for English-language scholarly, non-fiction works on Southeast Asian Studies (author’s first book)
The George McT. Kahin Prize for distinguished scholarly works on Southeast Asia beyond the first book
The A.L. Becker Prize for translations from Southeast Asian languages into English

Curriculum Materials

The Franklin R. Buchanan Prize for outstanding pedagogical or curriculum publication on Asia designed for any educational level, elementary through university
